Olive nerites are a fantastic snails because of how hardy they are, and how much algae that they eat. To illustrate our point: Although we currently reside in FL, we did, years ago, move up to South Carolina in January. In the Spring, we found a couple of "Olives" in a tank that had been somehow left aside throughout the winter. Sad, we were prepared to throw them out. But, the Olives were fine, on their own for a year! Shocked and impressed... and we plopped them into a tank. We are able to order these from wholesale or collect them on our own from across the state. The ones that we collect are interesting because many carry barnacles and are a wide variety of sizes and shades of olive. Because they are extremely hardy and eat a lot of algae, customers are able to purchase them for their pond. They also survive in brackish water. They don't grow very big...not quite to the size of a nickel.
